Love, the leading theme of the 60th edition of the Puccini Festival

Happy Birthday – Madama Butterfly (25 July – 1, 8, 16 and 24 August)

The première of Madama Butterfly, 110 years ago, will be celebrated with a new production that carries the signature of one of Italian opera’s major protagonists : Renzo Giacchieri who is entrusted with the sets design, costumes and the direction.
On the podium Daniel Oren. The role of Puccini’s heroine will be sing by three major interpreters: Micaela Carosi, Amarilli Nizza and Silvana Froli. Pinkerton is a young man, making his debut in the role, the brilliant tenor Rame Lahaj , born in Istog (Kosovo), while Sharpless will be Giovanni Meoni and Suzuki Renata Lamanda.

Opera in Cinema. La Bohème (26 July – 2, 10, 15 and 22 August)

La Bohème will be directed by one of Italy’s greatest film directors: Ettore Scola who celebrates, in this 60th edition of the Puccini Festival, his 50 years of glorious career. Scola brings new life and fresh interpretation to Puccini’s masterpiece for the most widely performed opera in the world. The sets are designed by his friend and collaborator Luciano Ricceri and the costumes are by Cristina Da Rold. On the podium “Puccini Festival’s baton ” Valerio Galli a much respected and refined interpreter of the composer, he made his major operatic debut in Torre del Lago. La Bohème boasts an exceptional cast that made with the incomparable voice of Daniela Dessi in the role of Mimi, Fabio Armiliato in that of Rodolfo, Alessandro Luongo as Marcello and Alida Berti as Musetta.

Puccini 2.0 – Il Trittico (3, 7, 21 and 30 August)

The Puccini Festival always has dedicated great attention to young artists who have the opportunity to studying and debuting in a Festival that draws audiences from all over the world. The 2014 Puccini Festival Foundation project Puccini 2.0, specifically created with young artists in mind, is aimed at giving them real job opportunities, as well as, career growth. Thanks to this project, the Puccini Festival stages in Torre Del Lago, after 40 years, Il Trittico in full score with three one-act operas: Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. In this light, the staging of Il Trittico has been entrusted to the 2014 Academy of Superior Studies for Puccini voices. The young singers, selected by the Academy, will have the opportunity of living a great experience, hand in hand, with major performers like Amarilli Nizza that will star in all three female roles, Alberto Mastromarino in the role of Michele and and the great and priceless Rolando Panerai in the role of Gianni Schicchi. However, it does not end there as the Direction, Sets and Costumes will also we see protagonists young talent. The competition for Design and Staging was won by a group of young women led by Monica Bernardi for the Sets of Il Trittico and Carla Conti Giulia as assistant for Sets and Costumes. The direction of Il Tabarro will be in the hands Selene Farinelli. Vittoria Lai and Giorgia Guerra will have the direction of Suor Angelica and, Elena Mercerelli will have the direction of Gianni Schicchi with Lorena Marin for Costumes.The opera will be staged the theatre’s Enrico Caruso Auditorium. L’incompiuta Turandot (9, 14, 17, 23 and 29 August)

The entire Festival programme is dedicated to Puccini’s music, which will see five performances of Turandot in the month of August. The title is set to become a permanent proposal of the Festival in Torre del Lago, a must for audiences from all around the world offering unique emotion of listening to the famous aria Nessun Dorma under the starry sky of the Puccini Festival.
For the 60th edition, the design and direction, are entrusted to an eclectic artist, who has grown up professionally in Torre del Lago, Angelo Bertini, in his directorial debut. The conductor is a musician and experienced and former Artistic Director of the Puccini Festival, Marco Balderi. In the role of the Ice Princess two extraordinary performers, the great Giovanna Casolla alternating the talented Lise Lindstrom. Walter Fraccaro will be Calaf while Serena Farnocchia will sing Liu.
